Itami Airport (ITM) to Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe: Limousine Bus, Monorail or Taxi?
Osaka's Itami Airport handles domestic flights only, so you arrive here from Tokyo, Sapporo, Okinawa or another Japanese city. There is no JR station: the airport limousine bus is the easy way into Umeda (about 30 minutes, ¥650), Namba, Kyoto or Kobe, and the monorail plus Hankyu or Midosuji line is the cheap way. Short version: Itami (ITM), officially “Osaka International Airport”, has only domestic flights, so you land here from another Japanese city, not from abroad (international flights use Kansai Airport). It is much closer to the city than KIX. There is no JR line, so take the airport limousine bus: Osaka Station / Umeda about 30 minutes, ¥650; Namba about 30 – 35 minutes, ¥730; Kyoto Station about 55 minutes, around ¥1,400 – ¥1,500; Kobe Sannomiya about 40 minutes, around ¥1,100. Buy at the machine by the bus stop or tap your IC card. The cheaper alternative is the Osaka Monorail to Hotarugaike (Hankyu to Umeda) or to Senri-Chuo (Midosuji subway to Shin-Osaka, Umeda and Namba). Buses stop running around 20:00 – 21:00, earlier for Kyoto.
Itami vs Kansai Airport: which one are you at?
| Itami (ITM) | Kansai (KIX) | |
|---|---|---|
| Official name | Osaka International Airport (despite the name, domestic only) | Kansai International Airport |
| Flights | Domestic only: Tokyo Haneda, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Okinawa, Sendai and more | International and domestic, plus Peach / LCCs |
| Distance to Umeda | ~15 km, 30 min | ~50 km, 50 – 70 min |
| Rail link | Osaka Monorail only (no JR, no Nankai) | JR Haruka, Nankai Rapi:t |
| Operating hours | Flights roughly 7:00 – 21:00 | 24 hours |
If your ticket says “Osaka” for a domestic flight, check the code: ITM is Itami, KIX is Kansai, UKB is Kobe Airport. Getting this wrong is common, and the airports are an hour apart.

The limousine bus (what most people should take)
- Collect your bag and walk out of arrivals. The bus stops are directly outside both the north (JAL) and south (ANA) sides of the terminal; signs in English show the number for each destination.
- Buy a ticket from the machine next to the stop (cash or card), or tap your IC card (Suica, ICOCA, PASMO) when you get off. Not sure about IC cards yet? How IC cards work.
- Hand your suitcase to the staff, who load it under the bus and give you a tag (keep it).
- Buses to Osaka Station leave every 10 – 20 minutes for most of the day; Kyoto and Kobe about every 20 – 30 minutes.
Where it stops in Osaka: the Osaka Station route stops at a few big Umeda hotels and at Osaka Station; the list is posted at the stop. The Namba route stops at Osaka City Air Terminal (OCAT) at JR Namba and at Namba Station near Takashimaya. Check which suits your hotel; they are 10 minutes’ walk apart.
Rush hour: the bus uses the Hanshin Expressway. On weekday mornings and evenings, 30 minutes can become 50. The train route is more predictable.
The monorail route (cheaper, reliable, more changes)
The Osaka Monorail station is connected to the terminal by a walkway from the second floor. From there:
- For Umeda / Osaka Station: ride 2 stops to Hotarugaike, change to the Hankyu Takarazuka Line to Osaka-Umeda (~25 min). Total ~35 min, about ¥500. Easy with a carry-on; awkward with two big suitcases on the stairs at Hotarugaike.
- For Shin-Osaka, Namba, Shinsaibashi, Tennoji: ride to Senri-Chuo (~12 min) and change to the Midosuji Line (Kita-Osaka Kyuko trains run through). Shin-Osaka ~35 min, Namba ~50 min. One change, no stairs drama.
- For Kyoto: ride the monorail to Minami-Ibaraki and change to the Hankyu Kyoto Line for Kyoto-Kawaramachi (Gion and downtown). Cheapest way to Kyoto; slower than the bus.
The monorail runs until about 23:00, later than the buses.
Arriving late
The last buses leave around 20:00 – 21:00 for Osaka, earlier for Kyoto (around 19:00) and Kobe. If your flight lands after that:
- Take the monorail (until about 23:00) and the Midosuji or Hankyu lines.
- Take a taxi; the rank is outside arrivals. To Umeda or Shin-Osaka it is affordable, to Kyoto it is not.
- Pre-book a private transfer if you are a group with luggage; it costs about the same as a taxi for 3 – 4 people and the driver meets you at arrivals.

Flying out of Itami
- Allow 30 – 40 minutes by bus from Umeda (more in rush hour) and arrive an hour before departure; it is a small, efficient airport.
- Bags can be forwarded to the airport a day or two ahead if you are flying light.
- The rooftop observation deck is free and one of the best plane-spotting decks in Japan; planes pass very low over the city on approach.

Can I pay the bus with a credit card? At the ticket machines, yes. On board, IC cards are the easy option.
