How to Buy Shinkansen Tickets in 2026: SmartEX, Station Machines, or Klook?
The cheapest and easiest way to ride the Shinkansen between Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka is the official SmartEX app: foreign cards work, you board with a QR code or your IC card, and booking 21 days ahead saves about ¥1,700 Tokyo to Osaka. Here is how to register, book, board and change a ticket, and when the station machine or a reseller is the better call.

Short version: For any trip on the Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu Shinkansen (Tokyo – Nagoya – Kyoto – Shin-Osaka – Hiroshima – Hakata – Kagoshima), download SmartEX, JR Central and JR West’s official booking app. It is in English, takes Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Amex from overseas, costs nothing to join, and lets you board with a QR code on your phone or by tapping your Suica/ICOCA. A Nozomi reserved seat Tokyo → Shin-Osaka is ¥14,720 at the station, ¥14,520 on SmartEX, and ¥12,980 if you book 21+ days ahead (EX Hayatoku 21). You can book from home one month ahead from 10:00 Japan time. If your card fails 3D Secure, buy at a station ticket machine with the same card; it works without the online check.
Which way to buy: quick comparison
| Way to buy | Price (Tokyo → Shin-Osaka, Nozomi reserved) | Book before you fly? | How you board | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SmartEX app (official) | ¥14,520; ¥12,980 with Hayatoku 21 | Yes, 1 month ahead | QR code or IC card tap | Almost everyone |
| Station ticket machine (red/green “Shinkansen” machines) | ¥14,720 | No | Paper ticket | Card failed online; deciding on the day |
| Ticket office (Midori-no-Madoguchi) | ¥14,720 | No | Paper ticket | JR Pass seat reservations, complex trips; expect queues |
| Klook / other resellers | Usually a little above station price | Yes | E-voucher or QR, depending on product | Paying in your own currency; one checkout with other bookings |
| Unreserved seat (car 1–2) | ¥13,870 | No | Paper ticket or IC | Flexible plans outside peak season only |
Prices are adult one-way in a regular season (late 2026). JR Central adds about ¥200 in busy periods and ¥400 at peak, and takes ¥200 off in quiet weeks; Hayatoku fares are fixed.
Which lines SmartEX covers (and which it does not)
SmartEX sells the line most visitors ride:
- Tokaido Shinkansen: Tokyo / Shinagawa / Shin-Yokohama – Nagoya – Kyoto – Shin-Osaka
- Sanyo Shinkansen: Shin-Osaka – Shin-Kobe – Okayama – Hiroshima – Hakata
- Kyushu Shinkansen: Hakata – Kumamoto – Kagoshima-Chuo
It does not sell the lines going north or east from Tokyo (Tohoku to Sendai and Aomori, Hokuriku to Kanazawa, Joetsu, Yamagata, Akita). Those are booked on JR East’s own site. If your trip is Tokyo – Kyoto – Osaka – Hiroshima, SmartEX is all you need.
Note the station name: the Shinkansen stops at Shin-Osaka, not Osaka Station. Shin-Osaka is one stop (4 minutes) north of Osaka/Umeda on the JR Kyoto Line or the Midosuji subway. Leave 15 minutes for the change with luggage.
Step 1: register (10 minutes, do it at home)
- Download SmartEX (iOS/Android) or go to smart-ex.jp and switch to English.
- Enter your name, date of birth, a password and an email address. You must be 18 or over. Add a second email if you can; one-time codes go there.
- Enter a credit card. Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners and Discover are accepted. Your card must support 3D Secure (the “verify it’s you” step with your bank app or an SMS code). Regular credit cards work best; prepaid and some debit cards are rejected.
- Optional: register your IC card number (Suica, ICOCA, PASMO, including Welcome Suica Mobile). If you do, you can tap straight through the Shinkansen gate. If not, use the QR code. Both are fine.
No annual fee and no sign-up fee.
If 3D Secure fails (common when your bank’s SMS does not reach you abroad, or the bank blocks a Japanese merchant): call or message your bank to allow it, try another card, or skip SmartEX and buy at a station machine in Japan, which takes the physical card without the online check.
Step 2: book a seat
- Open Reserve, pick the date, departure and arrival stations (e.g. Tokyo → Shin-Osaka), and number of passengers.
- Choose a train. Nozomi is the fastest (2 h 15 min Tokyo – Shin-Osaka), runs every few minutes, and is what you want unless your fare says otherwise. Hikari stops more (about 3 h); Kodama stops everywhere (about 4 h).
- Choose the fare. The app shows the regular SmartEX fare and any discounted fares still on sale (see below).
- Pick a seat on the seat map. Seat E (two-seat side) faces Mount Fuji on the right going Tokyo → Osaka; seat A going the other way. Fuji shows for about a minute near Shin-Fuji on a clear morning.
- If your bag is over 160 cm in total dimensions (a large checked suitcase), choose a seat with oversized baggage area (the last row of the car). It is free, but turning up without one costs ¥1,000 and there may be no space. Easier still: forward the suitcase.
- Pay. You get a confirmation email and the trip appears under My Trips.
Booking opens one month before travel at 10:00 Japan time (that is the previous evening in the Americas). For New Year, cherry-blossom weekends and Golden Week, be there at 10:00.
Step 3: board with a QR code or your IC card
QR code: In the app, go to My Trips → Details → Display QR-Ticket. Add it to Apple Wallet, or print it. At the station, use a Shinkansen gate marked QR and hold the code over the reader. Take the small seat information slip the gate prints; keep it until you exit (do not put it back in a gate).
IC card: If you registered your Suica/ICOCA, just tap it at the Shinkansen gate like the subway. The gate prints the same seat slip.
Coming from a local train (e.g. you rode the JR Kyoto Line to Shin-Osaka): at the transfer gate, hold the QR code over the reader and then tap the IC card you used on the local train, which pays the local fare. With a paper local ticket, insert it first, then show the QR code.
Print a backup of the QR code, or screenshot it. Some screen protectors make codes unreadable, and you do not want your phone battery to be the single point of failure.
The discounts worth knowing
| Fare | Book by | Trains | Tokyo → Shin-Osaka | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular SmartEX fare | Until just before departure | Any | ¥14,520 | Changes free and unlimited before departure |
| EX Hayatoku 21 | 21 days before | Nozomi only | ¥12,980 (Tokyo → Kyoto ¥12,430) | No changes; refund fee ¥320; not sold at Golden Week, Obon, New Year, Silver Week |
| EX Hayatoku 7 / 3 / 1 | 7, 3 or 1 day before | Mostly Hikari or Kodama, some Green Car | Varies by product | Limited seats per train; read the conditions on screen |
| EX Family Hayatoku 7 | 7 days before | Hikari / Kodama | Varies | 2+ people travelling together |
The rule of thumb: if your dates are fixed, book Hayatoku 21 the day your itinerary is settled. Two people going Tokyo → Osaka save about ¥3,000 doing nothing else. If your plans might move, take the regular SmartEX fare and enjoy free changes.
Hayatoku 21 also covers longer runs: Tokyo → Hiroshima ¥15,390, Tokyo → Hakata ¥17,920, Shin-Osaka → Kumamoto ¥15,400, Shin-Osaka → Kagoshima-Chuo ¥18,400.
Changing or cancelling
- Regular SmartEX fare: change the train, time or date for free, as many times as you like, until departure, in the app. Missed your train? You can still ride the unreserved cars of a later train the same day on that ticket.
- Cancel: a refund fee of about ¥320 per ticket (more for some products close to departure).
- Hayatoku fares: cannot be moved to another train; cancel (¥320) and rebook at whatever is left. Missing a Hayatoku train costs you most of the fare.
Unreserved seats: only outside peak season
Nozomi trains now have unreserved seats in just two cars (1 and 2), down from three before March 2025. On weekends they fill at Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, and during Golden Week, Obon and New Year all Nozomi trains are fully reserved, with no unreserved cars at all. The saving is a few hundred yen. Reserve.
Kansai examples
| Trip | Train | Time | Approx. reserved fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shin-Osaka → Tokyo | Nozomi | 2 h 15 min – 2 h 30 min | ¥14,520 (SmartEX) / ¥12,980 (Hayatoku 21) |
| Kyoto → Tokyo | Nozomi | 2 h 10 min | ¥13,970 (SmartEX) / ¥12,430 (Hayatoku 21) |
| Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima | Nozomi | 1 h 25 min | Roughly ¥10,500 – ¥11,000 |
| Shin-Osaka → Hakata (Fukuoka) | Nozomi / Mizuho | 2 h 30 min | Roughly ¥15,500 |
| Kyoto → Shin-Osaka | Shinkansen | 14 min | Not worth it; the JR Special Rapid takes 25 min for under ¥600 |
Kyoto ↔ Osaka: do not take the Shinkansen. The JR Kyoto Line Special Rapid to Osaka Station is almost as fast, a fraction of the price, and you can pay with your IC card.
What about the JR Pass?
If you hold a Japan Rail Pass, you do not buy on SmartEX. Reserve seats free through the JR Pass’s own reservation site, a station machine (scan your pass) or a ticket office. Nozomi and Mizuho require an extra supplement with the national pass. For a typical Osaka – Kyoto – Tokyo trip, point-to-point tickets are usually cheaper: see Why the JR Pass is not worth it for Kansai.
Buying through Klook instead
Klook and similar sites sell Shinkansen tickets for one-way trips such as Tokyo ↔ Osaka. The price is normally at or slightly above the station fare, so you pay more than SmartEX’s Hayatoku. Reasons to use it anyway: you can pay in your home currency with your usual card when 3D Secure keeps failing, or you want everything in one app with your airport transfer and passes.

Check how the product is issued (QR code you scan directly, or a voucher you exchange at a ticket office) before you buy.
New in October 2026: Supreme Class
From 1 October 2026 some Nozomi trains carry private Supreme Class cabins (a single room in car 10, a double in car 7), sold only through SmartEX. Tokyo → Shin-Osaka costs around ¥42,000 for the single. Nice for a special occasion; for everyone else, a Green Car seat (about ¥20,000) is the comfortable upgrade.
FAQ
Can I use SmartEX with a foreign credit card? Yes. Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners and Discover are listed. The card must pass 3D Secure. If it fails, ask your bank to approve the transaction or buy at a station machine.
Do I need a Japanese phone number? No. SmartEX uses email for registration and one-time codes.
I booked for 3 people. How do the others get through the gate? Each seat has its own QR code. Send them the codes from the app (email or message), or all of you go through using the QR codes on your phone one by one. IC-card boarding works only for the account holder’s own registered card.
Can I book a ticket the same day? Yes, until a few minutes before departure, at the regular SmartEX fare. Outside peak periods there are almost always seats.
Is a window seat with a Fuji view worth fighting for? On a clear morning, yes: seat E going west, seat A going east. In summer haze you may see nothing.
What if I miss my reserved Nozomi? On a regular SmartEX fare or a station ticket, you can ride the unreserved cars of a later train the same day. On Hayatoku fares, the ticket is lost except a small refund.
Should I pick Nozomi or Hikari? Nozomi unless a discount only applies to Hikari. Nozomi saves 30 to 45 minutes Tokyo – Osaka and runs far more often.
